Funding of Awards for 2009
At the January meeting of the Yorkshire Cancer Research Council of Management the following measures were agreed:
- For YCR's financial year ending 31st March 2010 not to fund any application which would significantly drain the YCR reserves. It should be noted that this would primarily affect applications for Capital Awards.
- In the same vein the number of Clinical Fellowship Awards will be limited to a maximum of three to be running at any one time. Currently two Clinical Fellowships have been awarded and so applicants for a third place will be judged on competitive grounds. Once a total of three Awards have been made no more applications will be accepted until further notice.
- The number of Researcher/Senior Researcher Awards will be limited to no more than one in each category at any one time.
- The number of Professorial Fellowships will be limited to one running at any one time.
These actions will be regularly reviewed. Anyone seeking clarification as to how many Awards are currently in place should contact YCR via: admin@ycr.org.uk.
Please note the following addendum to the Awards Handbook, approved by the Trustees on 9 September 2009, this will be incorporated in the revised Handbook to be published in the near future.
Unless specific approval has been agreed in advance by trustees, Programme Award holders and their teams will not be considered for further Awards of any kind from the YCR on research topics related to or similar to those in the last Programme application made to the YCR. This is irrespective of whether or not that part of the application was funded.
YCR wishes however to encourage Programme Award holders to seek additional funding support from other Award giving bodies.
Programme Award holders and their teams would only be considered for further awards from YCR, if in the opinion of the Chair of the SAC, the research area is clearly and unambiguously different from those found in the last Programme Award application.
Please note the following addendum approved by the Trustees on 14 October 2009, this will be incorporated in the revised Handbook to be published in the near future.
YCR Policy on funding Awards to applicants who are approaching retirement from employment with their Institution
This policy applies to all principal applicants and co-applicants who either (a) have passed the normal retirement date of their host Institution, or (b) will pass that date during the period of the Award for which they are applying, and who, in each case, have agreed a deferred retirement date with the Institution.
YCR will accept Award applications from applicants referred to in (a) and (b) above, providing that their host Institution has in place a clear and robust process for considering requests to work beyond the Institution's normal retirement date. Such applicants must ascertain with their Institution in advance of making an application to YCR, that their request for a deferred retirement date has been agreed.
Applicants will normally be expected to be employed for at least 50% fte for the duration of the Award.
If an applicant subsequently retires before the end of an Award, this will normally trigger a review by YCR as to whether the Award should continue.
The applicant may not include in their application to YCR a request for their own or part of their own salary.
The applicant must provide written evidence that the host Institution has formally agreed to continue the applicant's contract of employment beyond the normal retirement date and also confirm their new retirement date. It is not sufficient to have an agreement of continued support from the Institution that is dependent on the success of an application to YCR. In addition, a letter of sponsorship is required from the relevant Head of Department confirming that space in and support from the host Department for the applicant will continue to be available for the full duration of the Award.
The maximum duration of any YCR Award will be dictated by the applicant's new retirement date.
Decisions on whether or not to fund an application will be taken by the SAC, or a sub-committee of the SAC, and will be based upon the quality on the research proposed in the usual way.
Our Scientific Advisory Committee meets twice a year to decide which Project and Equipment Awards to fund.
Yorkshire Cancer Research has developed separate downloadable Word application forms for Project Awards and Equipment Awards. These forms and the Awards Handbook may change, so please check the YCR website before the application deadline. YCR will not change the application form or associated documents within one month preceding any deadline. If you would like to apply for a Project Award or an Equipment Award, please download the associated application form and the Awards Handbook.
Pump Priming Awards, Travel Awards, and PhD studentships also have application forms that can be downloaded from the website.
For other Awards detailed in the Awards Handbook which require an application form, please contact YCR (science@ycr.org.uk) for a copy of the application form along with information regarding availability and deadlines. Please ensure you have read 'Funding of Awards for 2009' beforehand.
