National Lung Screening Programme letters to the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

Yorkshire Cancer Research funded the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial (also known as the Leeds Lung Health Check) in 2018. This screening trial provided evidence to the UK National Screening Committee which led to their recommendation for a National Lung Screening Programme. The Government originally committed to a 5-year rollout of the programme, scanning an estimated 142,000 people in Yorkshire for the first time, detecting approximately 3,100 lung cancers and potentially saving hundreds of lives. It is essential that the rollout of this programme is fully funded, in order to maintain pace and meet the ambition of nationwide coverage by 2029.

Yorkshire Cancer Research coordinated two letters to the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care urging the Government to look at the funding pace. These letters were kindly signed by Alex Sobel MP, Richard Burgon MP and Fabian Hamilton MP. Richard, Fabian and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have all visited the Leeds Lung Health Check whilst it was in their constituencies and seen first-hand the positive impact of lung screening in the community.
