Keeping your data safe
Yorkshire Cancer Research is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. The below information explains how the Charity uses and protects any information you give us when participating in Stop Smoking Support. Why are we processing your personal data?
We will process your personal data for:
- Organising appointments
- Storing data collected during appointments
- Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the service
- Producing reports and data updates to share with the NHS and associated organisations. Data in these reports and updates will be grouped and anonymised meaning it will not contain any information that could be used to identify you.
- Sharing contact details with your GP and/or medication suppliers in order to receive stop smoking aids.
- Sharing information with another healthcare professional if this contributes to the provision of effective care.
- Sharing information with local authorities to receive funding to support the service
- Sharing information with local Stop Smoking Service where they may wish to contact you directly
How will my data be stored securely?
All data will be kept securely in accordance with UK data protection laws such as the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. The data will be entered onto secure database(s), accessed only by staff who deliver and evaluate the service.
What will happen if I don’t want to carry on with the support?
You are free to stop taking part at any time. If you withdraw consent for further data collection, data provided up to the point of withdrawal will be kept on file to monitor and evaluate the service. This includes data on area, age range, gender, occupation, ethnic group, stop smoking aid used and outcomes. Grouped and anonymised data will be used in reports and data updates.

If you want to complain about how your information has been handled, please contact the Stop Smoking Support team as above. If you are not happy after that, you can contact the Data Protection Officer for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The Stop Smoking Support team can give you their details. If you are not happy with their response or believe we are processing your data in a way that is not right or lawful, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) (www.ico.org.uk or 0303 123 1113)
