Yorkshire Cancer Research response to the UK NSC Prostate Cancer Screening consultation

Yorkshire Cancer Research has submitted a detailed response to the UK National Screening Committee’s (UK NSC) consultation on prostate cancer screening. The UK NSC are a group of experts who advise the government and the NHS on screening policy. They recently concluded that whole-population screening is not currently recommended but that men aged 45 to 61 with faulty BRCA genes should be screened for prostate cancer using a PSA test every two years. This draft recommendation is a welcome step forward.

In this consultation response, the charity highlights the crucial role of ongoing research, including major studies funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research such as IMProVE, FINESSE and PROTECT-C, the need for improved data quality and several practical considerations essential for future reviews. Our recommendations aim to ensure that any future prostate cancer screening programme is effective, equitable, and grounded in robust UK-specific evidence.
