Angie Cox

Professor Angie Cox is a geneticist. She led a team at the University of Sheffield to a breakthrough in breast cancer genetics. Her research in 2004 revealed a common inherited fault of a gene known as caspase-8 affected an individual’s chances of developing a certain type of breast cancer. An international group of laboratories then tested the result and found this genetic fault to be a reliable cancer risk predictor across a number of populations around the world. Since that discovery, Cox went on to investigate cancer risk in colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer. Genetic specialists estimate up to 12 in every 100 cancers are linked to an inherited gene change. Thanks to the work of researchers like Cox and her team, further progress is being made in genetic testing.
