Stephen Blackband

By the early 1990s, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had been proven to be effective for revealing both primary cancers and previously unsuspected tumours. Dr Stephen Blackband, a pioneering young physicist on the Hull research team, took this even further. In 1994, he won a major national science award for producing images deeper into the body than was previously possible and discovering how to increase image quality to show greater anatomical detail. This was a breakthrough for cancer diagnosis and improving surgical outcomes and inspired further life-saving progress by researchers in Britain and America.
